Internal and External Condoms

A condom is a thin, fitted tube. Internal condoms are placed inside of the vagina or anus, and external condoms are worn over the penis before sex.

Condoms prevent pregnancies and STDs. They create a barrier that keeps semen and other body fluids out of the vagina, rectum, or mouth. You might hear it called a rubber or the barrier method.

How Does It Work?

External condoms are relatively easy to use. To put one on yourself:

  1. Wait for your penis to become fully erect.

  2. Carefully tear open the condom package.

  3. Unroll the condom by about 1/2 inch.

  4. Place the condom on your penis while pinching the tip of the condom to remove air and leave space for semen. This important step helps prevent the condom from breaking.

  5. Roll the condom all the way down your penis.

  6. Smooth out any air bubbles.
